Laura Stokes' Portfolio
Below you will find a list of the courses that I have taken on my path to a master's degree in education. By clicking on the name of the course, you will get to see some examples of the work that I completed for each course.
Summer 2007:
TE 891 Teaching Curriculum and Schooling with Professor Steve Weiland
This course was my introductory course to the program. I was able to learn how important it is to self pace, as well as get the most out of the course. I was given some very interesting books to read that challenged the way that I viewed education as well as gave me different concepts to explore in more depth.
Fall 2009:
CEP 806 Learning Science With Technology with Professor David Wong
During my time spent in this course, I was faced with many challenges that pushed me to learn more about many types of technology that I had access to. I found ways to teach science by incorporating multiple forms of technology into the lessons that I planned for my students to make them more engaging and relevant to my students' lives. However, the forms of technology that I learned to use didn't limit the activities that I could use with them to strictly science. I was able to apply my knowledge of the different forms of technology to other academic areas for my students as well.
Spring 2010:
TE 838 Children's Literature and Film with Professor Laura Apol
This course made me learn to examine even the smallest details within books and movies. I compared some classic children's books to the films that were made afterwards. I learned why film makers choose different angles and lighting to capture their audience's attention as well as why they change things from the books. I took what I learned from this course and try to find ways to engage my students by making sure I pay close attention to the smallest details within the classroom and my lesson planning.
Summer 2010:
CEP 882 Teaching Literacy For Students With Mild Disabilities with Professor Cynthia Okolo
During this course, I was given a new bag of tricks to help students who struggle with literacy. It allowed me to look closely at a few common disabilities that are often seen in an elementary school classroom such as students who are dyslexic, those that are ADD or ADHD, and many others. I was given ways to incorporate technology to keep them engaged as well as focus in on how to handle some of their disabilities with specific tasks that have been proven to work.

Fall 2010:
CEP 816 Teaching and Learning Across the Curriculum with Professor Randy Spiro

While taking this course, I learned how to use technology to link the learning my students experience to all of their academic areas. It showed me ways to incorporate the 21st century skills my students experience on a daily basis into the classroom in a fun and engaging way. I pushed myself to experiment more with types of technology I hadn't used before, and a chance to work harder to learn about technology I had already been used to using.

Spring 2011:

CEP 882 The Nature and Design of Compelling Experiences with Professor David Wong
When I began this course, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. In a short amount of time I was pleasantly surprised to see how the professor was able to take things such as architecture, television talk show sets, photography and interior design to show the importance of making meaningful experiences for our students. I learned how to pay close attention to things that are often overlooked when planning a lesson. It caused me to think about the way that I design my classroom to be inviting to students while making sure everything serves a purpose. I also learned to question myself when lesson planning. I ask why I am doing a certain lesson, and how I can make it better before I have even tried it.
TE 846 Accommodating Differences For Literacy Learners with Professor Jen Knight
This course did a great job of breaking down the challenges that many students have with literacy. It gave me ways to differentiate my reading instruction as well as activities to hit target areas. Throughout the course, I was given opportunities to study individual students with different literacy challenges, and was able to use strategies to help each of those students find success with literacy. Overall, I was able to give confidence to my struggling literacy learners, while building up my own  familiarity with different types of accommodations.
TE 848 Methods of Writing Instruction with Professors Lisa Hawkins and Janine Certo
Learning to teach writing was something that I struggled with, and this course helped to give me the confidence and the tools I needed to teach my students how to become great writers. It showed me ways to incorporate different genres, while focusing attention on writing topics that interested my students. Throughout the course, I learned ways to differentiate my writing instruction to target multiple styles of learning for my students as well.

Summer 2011:

ED 870 Capstone Portfolio with Professor Matthew Koehler
This course has given me an opportunity to develop my own web portfolio. Aside from designing the portfolio, I have gained valuable knowledge on ways to create a webpage. This is something that I will be able to bring to my future classrooms by being able to create a class website for students and parents.
TE 836 Awards and Classics of Children's LIterature with Professor Laura Apol (Work available after 7/1/11)
